Title research: Get Out

- What titles are displayed during the opening sequences?

The first few titles displayed in the opening sequence are the studio title, the production companies, and the movie title. These are Universal, Blumhouse, QC Entertainment, and Get Out respectively. The studio and production companies title appear in a light blue, thin font (most likely Arial), and only appear on the screen for 3 seconds. An additional production company (Monkeypaw Productions) appears but it's only on the screen for 1 second. The final title to appear before the title of the movie is the title card for the creator of the film, Jordan Peele. All titles are introduced and taken off-screen with a fade lasting one second. The title of the film is shown and it appears abruptly on-screen with no transition. Its font is bolded, it stays on screen for 5 seconds, and disappears with no transition. After the title disappears, the names of the actors appear in the same format as the studio titles. Following the actors are the casting, music supervisor, the music creator, costume designer, editor, producer, co-producers, executive producers, and finally the writer and director.

- What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

The images prioritized in the opening sequence are a man at night in a suburban neighborhood stuffing another man in the trunk of his car, the main character's camera, the dynamic between the two characters, the dense woodlands, as well as pictures of African Americans taken by the main character. The man putting the other man into the truck is revealed to be a white person's brain that has been transplanted into a black person's body. The flash produced by the camera reverts control to the person whose body has been taken over and brings them out of "the sunken place." It's revealed that the man being put into the truck was a test subject to transplant brains. The dynamic between the main characters is strong but will later change as the female's ulterior motive is revealed.

- What connotations do these images carry?

The image of the man being put into the trunk connotates a very eerie feeling and sets the tone by being the first image we see. The rest of the images produce a happy feeling especially when the hidden feature behind the flash is revealed.

- How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?

The film establishes the feeling of a thriller by introducing our main characters, protagonist, and antagonist. It also introduces the multiple settings that will be revisited more in-depth later in the film. It shows us the antagonist but doesn't outright revile their ulterior motive. The film gives the audience the character dynamic very early, which is important in thrillers to establish physical and mental strength in characters.

- What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

The only strategy I found in this film's opening sequence is the use of an uplifting song in a relatively dark movie.

- How has technology been used effectively? You want to consider camera angles, transitions, and editing techniques.

Technology was used effectively because of certain camera angles such as the one used to introduce the main female character where she is seen behind a bakery window. The same can be said for a shot in a different scene where a mirror is used to trick the audience into believing the main male character was somewhere he wasn't.
