Title research: Hush
- What titles are displayed during the opening sequences?
Similarly to Ma, the title sequence is very short and only shows three titles. These are the production companies and the title card. The companies that worked on this movie are Blum House, Intrepid Pictures, and Hush. The font used for the title is a black, bolded version of Verdana. The title appears with no transition and disappears with a three-second fade. This is the fourth and final appearance of Blum House as a production company for thriller and horror films, they have truly become a staple in the film industry especially since Get Out. Due to Netflix being the studio and the movie only airing on Netflix services, there was no need to include it as the studio in the title.
- What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?
The images prioritized in the opening sequence are the dense woods, a car in front of a nice-sized home, food being cooked (specifically the noise created by cooking), the main character, and the focus on her ears signaling her deafness.
- What connotations do these images carry?
These images carry a positive connotation because it nothing truly horrifying or alarming in the opening scenes. Yes, it is sad that Maddie (the main character) is deaf, but she has figured out how to live with it.
- How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?
This unlike the other title sequences I review does not establish the feeling of the genre it very peaceful and calming.
- What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?
The strategies used in the opening sequence are introducing shots that will be replicated later in the film with a scary spin on them.
- How has technology been used effectively? You want to consider camera angles, transitions, and editing techniques.
Technology was used effectively in transitions and editing techniques that show the change in hearing. There are serval moments in the film where the hearing perspective of the audience changes with transitions and camera movement. The first of two examples are the cooking scene in the opening in which the camera slowly circles the main character. This circling moment changes the hearing perspective from us the viewer who has all their hearing to Maddie, the main character who's completely deaf, but can read lips. In the second instance, the hearing perspective is swapped from the intruder to Maddie from a camera swoop from right to left passing a pillar.
