Genre Research: The First Purge
I have come to an end of analyzing thriller films with The First Purge. This movie came out in the summer of 2018 and was infamous for "ruining" the Purge trilogy. Personally, I loved the film for a multitude of reasons. From the political commentary to the near-perfect action sequences, I, unlike many critics, found this movie highly favorable. The First Purge received so much hate because of the change it introduced to the series. It changed the government's motive from killing poor people to killing poor black people. The change spawned hate because the last three movies stuck with the original motive and the change seemed unwarranted and useless.
One of my favorite elements of the thriller genre that will be present in both The First Purge and my opening sequence is the use of great action scenes. The original Purge movie was heavily criticized for the lack of action. Because of that, this movie was filled to the brim with action scenes. One in particular that I will mimic is a hallway fight scene. This was one of the most viewed scenes on youtube and although it's going to be hard to film, I'm willing to take on the task.
Two elements that I liked about the film are the action scenes and the sacres. The installment had the best scares in the series by far. I can vividly remember the scares from the alley scene with the main character. The action scenes in this movie were also amazing. The first killing spree of the movie seen through multiple monitor scenes was absolutely incredible.
One element that I did not enjoy from this film was the twist. In the middle of the movie the government's motive for creating the purge changes from a social experiment to a politician trying to stay in power by killing off people who wouldn't revote him back into office. This twist was unnecessary and caused confusion in the other three films because this was a prequel.
